Orchid on a Rock

I mounted this orchid directly onto a porous rock to see if the roots will eventually attach on their own. These are the materials and tools I used to build and water the setup.

Everything I Used

These are the products and materials I used in this project, along with why I chose each one.

Phalaenopsis Orchid

I used a Phalaenopsis orchid for this project. You don’t need this exact one, but I’d start with a healthy plant with firm roots before attempting the mount.

Dragon Rock

The holes and rough texture are why I chose this rock. They give the orchid roots plenty of places to grab onto if they eventually start attaching.

Long-Fiber Sphagnum Moss

I wrapped long-fiber sphagnum around the roots to help hold moisture while the orchid adjusts and begins attaching to the rock.

Shop the Moss

Clear Fishing Line

It keeps the orchid and moss secured to the rock while staying almost invisible.

Shallow Watering Bowl

I set the entire rock over this when I water so I can slowly saturate the moss and catch the water that runs through.

Orchid Fertilizer

After a couple weeks I add a small amount when I fertilize so the orchid still gets nutrients while growing in a setup without traditional potting media.

$50 Marginata Transformation

I gave myself $50 to transform this normal looking Marginata into something different.

Everything I Used

These are the products and materials I used in this project, along with why I chose each one.

Shallow Planter

I found mine in-store at Lowe’s, and I couldn’t find the the Lowe's website. I’m linking to their shallow planter section so you can browse for a similar shape and size.

Base for Potting Soil

What I use to start the mix and give it the water holding capacity it needs.

Shop the Base

Pine Bark

I added bark to create larger air spaces and keep the mix from becoming too dense.

Shop the Bark

Perlite

I mixed in perlite to keep the mix light and open, so water moves through instead of sitting around the roots.

Shop the Perlite

Bonsai Wire

I used bonsai wire to gently shape the Marginata stems and create more movement. I made small bends and will keep checking the wire as the plant grows.

Decorative Gravel

I used gravel as a top dressing to clean up the surface and give the finished plant a more intentional, sculptural look.

Shop the Gravel

Decorative Rocks

I added a couple of larger rocks at the end to break up the gravel and make the whole arrangement feel more like a finished piece.

Dracaena Marginata

Mine started in a 10-inch pot, but I couldn’t find the same size available online. This is a smaller 6-inch Marginata if you want to start with the same type of plant.

One Pink Princess Into Two

I took apart one established Pink Princess and separated it into two plants. I set them up differently based on the roots each section had, then let them grow from there. Here’s everything I used along the way.

Everything I Used

These are the products and materials I used in this project, along with why I chose each one.

Velcro Straps

I used soft Velcro straps to hold the stem against the support without tying it too tightly or damaging the plant as it grows.

Shop the Straps

Coco Husk Chips

I added coco chunks to make the mix chunkier and create more air space around the roots without making the soil too heavy.

Shop the Husk

Coco Coir

This was the finer base of my potting mix before I added the chunkier components.

Orchid Bark and Chunky Perlite

I used chunky bark in the soil mix to create larger air spaces around the roots and keep the mix from becoming too dense.

LECA

I used LECA for one of the divisions to provide this setup with additional airflow around the roots.

Shop the Leca

Clear Nursery Pot

I used a clear pot for the soil plant so I could see root development and monitor moisture deeper in the mix.

Wood Plant Stake

I added a simple stake to support the plant as it grew taller and help keep the stem upright.
